Montezuma's
Revenge
Distance: 50 miles
Elevation Gain: 4565
Start Place: Borrego
Springs
Start Time: 9am
We will meet in front of the big propane tank
in The Mall East
Parking Lot. It's not hard to find the Mall. It's the only Mall
in Borrego and right before Christmas Circle. From there we climb the mighty
Montezuma Grade, the longest "continous" climb in San Diego County. There is no
let up for 12 miles, and I mean no let up. The good news is that the climb is
like the first big hill on a roller coaster. After you ratchet your way to the
top, it's pretty much all downhill from there (except for the uphill parts).
We'll take a rest stop in the store at the Ranchita store and visit Monty the
Abominable Snowman. And then down the hill to San Felipe Road, over Teofulio
Summit and down the glorious 13 mile downhill to Scissors Crossing. With at
tailwind you will have no trouble pegging out at 50mph. At Scissors Crossing
we'll be turning East down Sentinac Canyon to Yaqui Pass Rd for the final climb.
Then it's downhill again to the desert floor and Borrego Springs and the cars.
Then to the Red Ocotillo for a fantastic lunch before heading home.
