Ocotillo Mio My
This ride is a benchmark for those who are training for their
first double century. Most of the easier double centuries have less
elevatioin gain stretched out over 200 miles. This has it all in first
70 miles. The good news is that this ride is front loaded. By that I mean
most of your climbing is over after the first half of the ride. The second half
is mostly downhill and flat.
We'll park under the lonely
tree in Ocotillo across from the cafe just North of the 8 FWY
entrance. The first climb as you watch the sunrise is quite
scenic and the gradient is not that bad and there is a huge smooth bike
lane on the 8 fwy to climb up to In Koh Pah rd. From there after exiting the
freeway we pick up old 80 and head through Jacumba, Boulevard,
Bankhead Flats, La Posta, Pine Valley, Guatay,
and Descanso. Then it's up the hardest climb of the day, Cuyamaca
Grade to Lake Cuyamaca for a late lunch. Then after skirting Julian we
enjoy a great downhill at Banner Grade to scissors crossing and then South
on the last leg Great Overland Stage Route through the desert. The final insult
is Sweeny Pass. Then a glorious downhill into Ocotillo and the BBQ joint and
beer! Yeah Baby! This is an epic adventure!
